A children’s book about amazing women, famous and unsung heroines. Kate Schatz wrote the words and Miriam Klein Stahl drew the pictures in this children’s book about edgy female role models. Rad American Women A to Z has headlined in leading women’s magazines and is a NY Times bestseller for middle-grade books.

Rad American Women A-Z by Kate Schatz, Illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl

A book for kids, parents, teachers, and cool grown-up friends! A is for Angela—as in Angela Davis, the iconic political activist. B is for Billie Jean King, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; C is for Carol Burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; D is for Dolores Huerta, who organized the unheard voices and exploited bodies of farmworkers; and E is for Ella Baker, who mentored Dr. Martin Luther King and is considered one of the most important African American leaders of the twentieth century...

Showcasing 26 bold women, one for every letter of the alphabet and from all different backgrounds. This book is filled with female role models for people of any gender and age. There are artists and abolitionists, scientists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble-rousers. Over half are women of color.

With due respect to the usual heavy-hitters of Women’s History, this book aims to bring to light the names and accomplishments of women who have been left out of history. Young people may know Susan B. Anthony, but have they heard of the Grimke sisters who left their wealthy slave-owning family to fight for suffrage and an end to slavery? They may know Amelia Earhart, but what about “Queen Bess” Coleman who was the first African-American pilot, who flew several years before Amelia! And they know Rosa Parks, but did they know that Ella Baker helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott? ISBN 978-0-87286-683-6.

Delores Huerta in Rad American Women A-Z by Kate Schatz, Illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl“I feel honored to be included in this book. Women need to take radical steps to become feminists, and to be strong to fight for their rights and those of others facing oppression and discrimination. The world needs rad women to create a just society.” Dolores Huerta, Labor Leader and Civil Rights Activist.

Rad American Women A-Z is not just for girls. Miriam Schatz has long thought about how she can help her students change the misogynistic culture, and thinks much of the power and responsibility lies with teenage boys, a target audience of the book.

“It’s really important for me that boys read the book. It’s really important that boys see female role models, too. If girls are the only ones who see this, then nothing changes. Kids are so much more receptive and wise than we give them credit for. Kids understand what’s fair and what’s not fair.” Miriamm Schatz

She is the chairwoman of the School of Literary Arts at the Oakland School for the Arts, and co-founder of The Encyclopedia Project. Kate received her MFA in Fiction Writing from Brown, and a double BA in Women's Studies/Creative Writing from UC Santa Cruz. She lives in the Bay Area.

“My 7-year-old daughter loves it and my 77-year-old mother loves it,” Stahl said. “I think because of the content of the book and the diversity of the book it also has outreach and appeal to adults as well — that both see some of their personal heroes in it and also find out about some women they didn’t know about.”

Rad American Women A-Z by Kate Schatz, Illustrated by Miriam Klein StahlMiriam Klein Stahn (Right) is a visual artist, teacher, co-founder of Berkeley High’s Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA), and an arts commissioner in Berkeley, California.

As a teacher and artist, she is committed to her local community, arts and education. Her work incorporates drawing and traditional printmaking, and public and social practice installations. Alongside her dedication to being a leader in public education focusing on relevant arts integration, equity and social justice, she participates in group exhibitions and her work has been reproduced in several publications.

As a printmaker she creates socially relevant work, creating portraits of political activists, misfits, radicals and radical movements. In creating artworks for public spaces, she highlights local heroes, regional ecology, and ways that broad members of society can gather and participate in collaborative efforts. Rad Women is the first entire book she has illustrated, but her characteristic bold, political prints, cut-outs, and drawings can be found in galleries, anthologies, and public spaces, and on posters and protest signs.
