You think you know her story. You’ve read the Brothers Grimm, you’ve watched the Disney cartoons, and you cheered as these virtuous women lived happily ever after. But real princesses didn’t always get happy endings. Sure, plenty were graceful and benevolent leaders, but just as many were ruthless in their quest for power, and all of them had skeletons rattling in their majestic closets. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe was a Nazi spy. Empress Elisabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire slept wearing a mask of raw veal. Princess Olga of Kiev slaughtered her way to sainthood. And Princess Lakshmibai waged war on the battlefield with her toddler strapped to her back.

Princesses Behaving Badly by Linda Rodgiquez McRobbie

Princesses Behaving Badly injects a little reality into the princess fantasy to make sure that the Disney fairy tale doesn’t become the expectation. Author Linda Rodriquez McRobbie does this by talking about real life princesses. These women were human, but the word princess, along with its myriad connotations, often glosses over that humanity. Their stories may begin, “Once upon a time…” but they haven’t always ended happily ever after.

We kind of believe being a princess is all it’s cracked up to be, witness the world’s fascination with Kate Middleton — the pretty commoner who married Britain’s Prince William to become Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Historical princess have been capable of great things as well as horrible things. They’ve made stupid decisions and some bad mistakes, loved the wrong people or too many people or not enough people. They are women who lied, murdered, used sex as a weapon, and even dressed like a man to hold on to power. ISBN 978-1-59474-644-4. Hardback.
