Princess Terra and King Abaddon by Setsu Shigematsu and The Guardian Princess Alliance. Princess Terra is the Guardian of the Land, and her role is to care for and protect the land that allows her people to lead healthy and balanced lives. When the greedy King Abaddon comes and tries to take their land away and tries to make it his own, Princess Terra steps in to stop King Abaddon from forcing them off their land We aim to shift the focus of girls self-esteem and self-worth. We want to encourage children empowerment through their full development, promoting both their independence and a deeper understanding of the vital interdependence between people and other living beings. The authors believe that the princess should be a positive role model whose power does not lie in beauty and royalty, but instead in knowledge and positive action that promotes a harmonious relationship with other living beings and the planet. The stereotypical story, of a damsel-in-distress who needs to be saved by a prince, teaches children that a girl destiny and happiness is to be coupled with a man. We are not anti-romance, but we believe that children should not be encouraged to focus on finding prince charming or being a beautiful princess as their life’s priority.

Princess Terra aims to transform the cultural meaning of princesses and princes into positive role model who take action to protect living beings and the planet for future generations. It seeks to promote greater racial, cultural, and gender inclusivity, and expand the cultural representation of beauty. Promotes a greater awareness of the environment with an aim to advance children knowledge in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Combines teaching ethical principals with the practical imperatives of helping parents, teachers, and children meet Common Core State Standards. This book has a page of comprehension and discussion questions based on Common Core Language Arts standards and designed by Common Core experts. It also has a glossary of terms that helps to expand children vocabulary, as well as an etymology chart to enrich their knowledge of other languages.

Princess Terra is for boys too because we believe its important for boys to read and learn about female characters of diverse races who are positive role models for all children, as intelligent, brave and compassionate leaders who use their special powers for the common good. Our books promote gender and racial equality. Our Guardian Princess Books are designed to be read to children age 2 and up, and the reading level has been professionally assessed for second grade and third grade readers. Older children and adults will find Guardian Princess stories inspiring, beautifully designed and thought provoking because they all relate to current global issues. What is the gender identity of Princess Terra? She is non-heteronormative and will help readers rethink traditional gender stereotypes and norms. Princess Terra models greater gender independence, and represents a paradigm shift away from traditional princesses who need to be paired with a prince. We want our books to teach important ethical lessons and be practical for use at home and in the classroom.

The Guardian Princesses was first conceptualized by Professor Setsu Shigematsu, Associate Professor in the Media and Cultural Studies Department of University of California, Riverside. As a Mother and an Educator, Setsu was concerned with the overwhelming Princess Culture, a multi-billion dollar industry, and how it is marketed to children. She refused to purchase princess products for her own three-year-old daughter, which only enhanced their appeal in her daughter eyes. Setsu decided to alter the content and social meaning of the princess through Princess Terra, which was written for her daughter fifth birthday. The Guardian Princess Alliance is a group of parents, educators, students, professionals, activists, and artists who are committed to creating better role models for children.
