Description
Dr. Gail Dines’ PORNLAND: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality takes a look at today’s porn industry, the impact on our culture, the effects on us as men and women, and how the dominant images and stories disseminated by the multibillion-dollar porn industry produce and reproduce a gender system that undermines equality and encourages violence against women.
PORNLAND looks at how our porn culture affects the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships. This important book argues that rather than sexually liberating or empowering us, pornography offers us a plasticized, formulaic, generic version of sex that is boring, lacking in creativity and disconnected from emotion and intimacy.
With the advent of the internet and digital technologies, access to porn today is extremely easy. The average age of first viewing of pornography is about 11 for boys. Studies reveal that young men — who consume more porn than ever before — have difficulty forming healthy relationships.
We are surrounded by pornographic images. Many of us are not aware of just how cruel and violent the industry is today. PORNLAND shows how today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy and Penthouse magazines, and how competition in the industry and consumer desensitization have pushed porn toward hard core extremes. Dr. Gail Dines is a Professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Wheelock College in Boston. She is a leading anti-porn scholar, an internationally acclaimed speaker, author, and feminist activist. Her writing and lectures focus on the hypersexualization of the culture and the ways that pornographic images filter down into mainstream pop culture. Her work has appeared in academic journals, magazines such as Time and Newsweek, and newspapers across the country.
Gail began her activism volunteering at a rape crisis center in Tel Aviv where she started the Haifa-based feminist movement, “Woman to Woman,” in her living room at the age of 22. For over twenty years Gail Dines has been researching and writing about the porn industry and pop culture. She has spoken at hundreds of colleges across the country, and the Q + A sessions often continue for hours with highly engaged and energized students.
Professor Dines’ lectures change the way people think about pop culture and pornography, and students regularly say that they will never look at the world the same way again.
