Molly is peaking through the gate and ready to streak into the organic farm. Inquisitive and mischievous, this homeless little cat scampers through. The farmers welcome Molly’s arrival and she charms her way into their hearts. She suddenly finds herself in the wondrous world of an organic farm. Using all of her senses, she romps, naps, and hunts among the vegetables, and explores the plants, bugs, and even the compost pile!
As children follow Molly through the seasons, they’ll watch young plants grow until they’re ready for harvest. When the farm is “put to bed” for the winter, Molly wonders what will happen to her. Seen through Molly’s eyes, the reader discovers the interplay of nature that grows wholesome food. Wonderful for green kids and green pets.
Based on a true story, Molly will touch children’s hearts and introduce them to plants and the key elements of growing food organically. Standards-based science concepts and activities at the end of the book expand the message of the story.
Carol Mallnor: As a young child, Carol Malnor was influenced to love nature. Carol discovered natural wonders at National Parks with her family. As an educator for over 30 years, that ripple of influence spread to her students. She took her students on many outdoor adventures hiking, camping, white water rafting, and rock climbing. Carol has conducted educational and environmental workshops in the U.S. and abroad.
The storyline and text changed dozens and dozens of times before we arrived at the final text, and my co-author Trina and I are really happy with how it turned out. I think one of the most useful aspects for teachers is the information in the back of the book—all the organic farming concepts, like compost, companion planting, and beneficial bugs, are explained in more detail.
Trina Hunner: A few years ago Trina Hunner attended a talk by the well-known author and illustrator Lynne Cherry, who told how she combined two passions in her life —art and nature—as a children’s book illustrator. And Trina thought, “Hey, me too!” Trina is an art teacher, and a studio art & environmental studies graduate and she loves nature.
For several years she lived adjacent to an organic community farm near Nevada City, California. That’s where she met Molly. She can often be found riding her bike to the elementary school where she teaches, skiing in the mountains near her home, or cuddling her cat Charlotte.
