All the paper used in the designs is handmade from 100% post-consumer materials and the card is handcrafted by Peruvian women, helping bring them out of poverty!
The women hand-make all of the cards, cutting or tearing out each piece and crafting them into beautiful designs. The designs are then glued to card stock (which is also made from recycled materials), packaged in a bag, and sent to the US! It takes about two weeks total from start to finish to have a finished card!
During her time in Peru, Grace was impressed with the creativity and industriousness of Peruvian women, especially how they sought to provide for their families in difficult circumstances. She stumbled upon the idea of making paper and greeting cards. With just $100 and some lessons on how to make recycled paper and homemade cards, the ladies started producing cards. Encouraged by the success in selling the cards and providing extra income to the women, Grace moved back to the US, and continued to promote it part-time outside of her own school and work.
Grace partnered with the Peruvian woman to start this project with $100 for supplies and had no idea that it would grow to its current size. The business now employs fifteen women and has been transforming lives as these women discover new talents in card design and business management, as well as being uplifted by the dignity that comes with work and provision for your own family. Such ‘success’ is not measured by money and has been a greater blessing than she could have ever imagined and one of the biggest joys of her life. She is deeply committed to Peru Paper Co., working for it to be economically and environmentally sustainable while achieving its social and spiritual goals of improving the lives of Peruvian women and their families.
The women sort through paper collected from offices or from individuals who save their paper to recycle, choosing which pieces are best to be turned into handmade paper. The paper is then torn it into very small pieces and soaked in water for a few days until it turns into a pulp. The pulp is put into a tub of water and dye is added. Sometimes other things like flower petals or sugar cane fibers are added to give the paper special texture. The pulp is sifted through a screen, and fabric is stretched over the screen on top of the pulp. The screen is turned over and the excess water is absorbed off of the fabric. The fabric is taken off the screen and hung to dry on a clothesline or laid in the sand with the wet paper attached. Once the paper dries, it is peeled off the fabric. It can then be used to make designs for the cards.
