One Day and One Amazing Morning is a middle grade novel that revolves around a neighborhood's one remaining orange tree and the secrets told, grand ideas shared, and events witnessed in its presence. The story is told in the viewpoints of the street's many characters, past and present.
From impressing friends to dealing with an expanding family, to understanding a younger sibling’s illness, the characters’ storylines come together around that orange tree. When a mysterious man arrives one day on Orange Street, the children who live on the block try to find out who he is and why he’s there. Little do they know that his story and the story of a very old orange tree connects to each of their personal worries in ways they never could have imagined.
The story takes place over the course of a day and a half. Joanne Rocklin’s masterful novel deftly builds a story about family, childhood anxieties, and the importance of connection. In the end the fate of the tree and the kids who care for it reminds us of the magic of the everyday and of the rich history all around us.
Joanne Rocklin was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where the winters are long! Wintry days and nights inspired me to read many, many books, the most important thing a writer can do. As soon as I learned to hold a pencil I began writing poems, stories, and diaries. I loved reading my own stories as well as library books to my two younger sisters.
As an adult I moved to Los Angeles, where my two sons were brought up, and my first books written. Now I live in Northern California and spend my days writing, reading, gardening, cooking up a storm, singing in our synagogue choir, babysitting for my grandchildren, and playing with our golden retriever, Zoe, and cat, Mitzie. I have always had cats and I have always lived within walking distance of a library. I love to read and write, but I also love to talk, especially about writing.
