Feminism Telesummit with Gail Dines - Growing Up in a Porn Culture
Porn is an addiction, a public health issue, and THE major form of sex education. It is sexualizing boys and men toward violence against women and making real intimacy for them impossible. The good news is that 90 minutes of feminist critical analysis helps to bring recovery. Gail Dines is Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies.
Professor Gail Dines - Growing Up In Porn Culture
Without porn, the world would be a better place. How many women have we met who have been "Christian Grey's victims" -- the protagonist in 50 Shades of Grey? Today, porn is sexual torture and it is mainstream fashion. Porn is an addiction and a public health issue. Porn is THE major form of sex education and is socializing boys and men toward violence against women -- and making real intimacy for men impossible.
Girls are not surviving porn well either. Depression, eating disorders, self harm and anxiety are increasing -- and the level of violence will get worse as boys grow into men.
The Good News: College students socialized into porn culture begin to recover in just 90 minutes of feminist critical analysis. In a 14 week course, they have a different view of the world.
You will learn:
- How and why the culture has become "pornified"
- The impact of living in a culture saturated by porn images
- How women and children can survive this onslaught
- How we can make real social change
To bring sanity to mainstream culture, we need:
- A coalition of groups vs. individual actions
- Increased feminist use of social media
- Protests in the streets
