How a band of women of the French Resistance survived Auschwitz

A Train In Winter is a moving story of the French Resistance recounting the deportation of 230 French women to Auschwitz-Birkenau on 24 January 1943. 49 survived. They were teachers, writers, chemists, housewives, students, an Opera singer, a midwife, a farmer's wife, and dental surgeon. They were 16 to 60, and strangers to one another.

An important and moving account of defiance, powerful friendship, horror and survival. These women were from villages and cities across France. They printed subversive newspapers and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets, transported weapons, hid resisters, secreted Jews to safety, and conveyed clandestine messages. Eventually, they were all hunted down by the Gestapo, separated from their families, and imprisoned outside Paris. It was there that they found solace and strength in each other.

In l943, they were all sent to Auschwitz. Only 49 returned to France. Six are alive in their 90s today. This is their story told in full for the first time. ISBN: 9780061650710.
