Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni (born June 7, 1943) is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Her primary focus is on the individual and the power one has to make a difference in oneself and in the lives of others. Giovanni’s poetry expresses strong racial pride, respect for family, and her own experiences as a daughter, a civil rights activist, and a mother. Since 1987, she has been on the faculty at Virginia Tech, where she is a University Distinguished Professor.

Cathy Ann Johnson, Illustrator of The Girls in the Circle Award Winning Children’s Book Illustrator Cathy Ann Johnson was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Cathy’s mother ran an in-home daycare center in the urban community. It was the environmental influence that inspired the beautiful, warm imaginative images and situations we experience in her work. Many of the children brought to her home were abandoned or were unofficial foster children. Cathy has always had a passion to draw and a love for children’s literature. She would frequently sneak to the neighborhood library to read and draw as many children’s books as she could.
