Judy Grahn is one of the founding Mothers of the Lesbian Feminist and Women’s Spirituality Movements in the United States. She holds an earned Ph.D. in Integral Studies with an Emphasis in Women’s Spirituality from California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.

Judy Grahn initiated and participated in profound cultural shifts brought about by the women’s and gay rights movements of the 1960s and 70s. She participated in the formation of new institutions like the Women’s Press Collective, the Oakland Feminist Women’s Health Center, and A Woman’s Place Bookstore, and the creation of whole new ways of living including collective feminist households that cut through the political and social isolation women experience.

Judy does presentations and performs her work, especially with singer, songwriter, Anne Carol Mitchell. She collaborates with dancer, choreographer, Anne Bluethenthal, and with Dianne E. Jenett on Serpentina, Women-Centered Research for Everyone, sponsoring events, publications, mentoring groups, and study trips to South India.

Professor Judy Grahn teaches Creative Inquiry and Creative Writing in the Writing, Consciousness, and Creative Inquiry Program at California Institute of Integral Studies. She also teaches Metaformic Consciousness, her own philosophy, women’s mythology and ancient literature. Most recently, Judy is co-directing an online Master’s course in Women’s Spirituality. The Graduates of her courses use their degrees as a catalyst for change in themselves, in their communities, and in the world.

Judy Grahn as Lifetime Achievement Grand Marshal San Francisco Pride June 2014In 2014, the SF Pride Board of Directors selected Judy as the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Grand Marshal. This very special award honors her many years of dedication to furthering the causes of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) communities. Seattle's 1999 Gay Day Parade was based on Judy’s book, Another Mother Tongue: Gay Words, Gay Worlds.

Judy's work has won many awards. As a member of the first lesbian feminist collective in the U.S., Judy's contributions to the feminist and LGBTQ movements have been instrumental. In 1995, she was awarded The Publishing Triangle's Lifetime Achievement Award (in Lesbian Letters). Publisher’s Triangle also established “The Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award” in 1996, which has been won by Alison Bechdel, Barbara Hammer, Judith Jack Halberstam, Lillian Faderman, and Jeanne Cordova, among others.
