Venus of LausselOn this Menstrual Hygiene Day — May 28, 2017, let’s celebrate the knowledge that 30,000 years ago, humans knew that we women bleed 13 times a year in sync with the Moon — and we do not die. Reverence behold for the women of Planet Earth during this pre-history time and beyond. A time when we lived in balance and in awe of Woman and Nature, natural truths we are re-membering today. This 30,000 year old bas-relief “Venus of Laussel” cave art from France, records a woman holding a crescent moon-shaped horn engraved with 13 lines — one for each of the 13 moons of the year — while she points to her womb. Perhaps this was a menstrual teaching manual for our ancestral sisterhood. This women’s knowledge is our millennia-old inheritance.

EAT ORGANIC – THE INSIDE SCOOP:

When it comes to Monsanto’s RoundUp, remember non-organic animals are fed grains and foods that are sprayed with RoundUp — and we are eating what they ate — RoundUp is present in the muscle of meat. Cows are rapidly fattened up with grain-based feeds, usually made with a base of soy or corn. The conventionally raised cows are often given drugs and hormones to grow faster, as well as antibiotics to survive the unsanitary living conditions. Cows are meant to eat grass which gives them a lot of Omega’s in the meat whereas cows fed grains cause inflammation in our body. Big difference.

There are new antibiotic rules for 2017 you might have seen news about that are worth a further look. Farmers are being required to work with a Veterinarian to treat their livestock with antibiotics. Antibiotics and hormones are a serious issue within the meat industry because farmers are now obtaining antibiotics without a prescription. We have to question the integrity and expertise of each veterinarian working with farmers and hope they use these drugs only when necessary. Remember, antibiotics are prohibited in organic farming. Organic Farmers take care of the environment by allowing the cows to graze in fields as opposed to keeping them confined where disease can easily spread.

The National Organic Program (NOP) develops the rules and regulations for the production, handling, labeling, and enforcement of all USDA organic products. This process, involves input from the National Organic Standards Board (a Federal Advisory Committee made up of fifteen members of the public) and the public.

Here are some studies:

In a 2002 University of Missouri study, chemists were shocked to discover that smaller, organically grown, oranges delivered 30 percent more vitamin C than the large conventionally grown ones. Certified nutritionist Virginia Worthington found that a serving of organic lettuce, spinach, carrots, potatoes, and cabbage provided the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, but not so for the same veggies grown by conventional farming.

Worthington reported that organically grown fruits and vegetables outpaced their conventional counterparts with as much as 27% more vitamin C, 21% more iron, 29%t more magnesium, 13.6% more phosphorus, and 18% more polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of plant compounds such as bioflavonoids, flavanols, and pycnogenols. They are anti-inflammatory and have a wide range of health benefits, including protection against allergies, arthritis, heart disease, cancer and more. The organics also showed 15% fewer nitrates and heavy metals than the conventional foods.

Here’s another interesting point. These phytonutrients, such as polyphenols and antioxidants, protect both people and plants. Pesticides — insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides — actually block a plant’s ability to manufacture these important plant compounds. Without them, plants are handicapped and too weak to fight off pests. The organic farmer, on the other hand, builds up these important nutrients by feeding the soil, emboldening the plants to naturally defend themselves against pests and disease.

In a study of antioxidants in organic and conventionally grown fruits, scientists found higher concentrations of valuable vitamin C, vitamin E, and other antioxidants in the organic foods. They theorized that the organically grown fruits developed more antioxidants as a defense and repair mechanism against insects when grown without the use of pesticides.

A 2007 study by researchers at the University of California-Davis, for example, found that organic tomatoes had nearly twice as much flavonoids as industrial tomatoes. Flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease. The UC-Davis study suggested that industrial tomatoes may have fewer of the metabolites because they are over-fertilized. When researchers at Washington State University compared organic strawberries and industrial ones, they found that the organic berries had 8.5% higher antioxidant activity, 9.7& more ascorbic acid, and 10.5% more phenolic than industrial berries. Finally, a January 2011 study published in the Journal of Dairy Science found that milk from cows raised organically in the UK had higher levels of beneficial fatty acids.

THE DIRECT TOXICITY OF ROUNDUP/GLYPHOSATE

Glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) is presented by Monsanto as a benign chemical for weed control which is inactivated in the soil. However, this is far from the case. Glyphosate interferes with enzymes in plants and microbes because of its ability to chelate (bind) trace metals and by its antibiotic action (RoundUp is patented for both). Other chemicals used in formulated products sold to farmers and gardeners enhance RoundUp’s toxic effects.

Commonly claimed to be only present in higher plants for production of essential amino acids, alkaloids etc., WRONG – important – microbiota in soils supports plant growth mineral uptake mammals supports gut organisms,

GLYPHOSATE: A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL BIOLOGICAL MOLECULE :

Kills SOIL bacteria, compromising soil quality and plant growth.

Kills GUT bacteria – compromising digestion, contributing or leading to Leaky Gut/Gut Permeability, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Autism, Obesity, Cancer and Endocrine Disruption.

I could go on and on. There is a lot of research showing the toxic effects of RoundUp despite Monsanto’s continuing claims that it is safe. RoundUp is not safe and there are numerous studies that prove it.

ROUNDUP INGREDIENTS:

I looked up the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet) on Round Up and found the following:

Active ingredient Potassium salt of N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine; {Potassium salt of glyphosate} Composition COMPONENT CAS No. % by weight (approximate) Potassium salt of glyphosate 70901-12-1 49

Other ingredients 51. The specific chemical identity is being withheld because it is trade secret information of Monsanto Company. Needed to put that in bold!

Now doesn’t every ingredient in everything else that has to do with food legally have to be disclosed? This is interesting because on the MSDS it clearly states Do NOT contaminate water when disposing of rinse waters. That alone would make me nervous to try it on food and one of the obvious reasons to go organic.

It also has a list of ECOLOGICAL information showing the toxic effects on our ecological system. It goes on to say it is “practically nontoxic” to our honey bee. What do they mean by “practically” anyhow? My question would be then why are we losing so many of these bees and what else could possibly be doing it? According to Monsanto’s website they are working with organizations to save the bees which puts out a mixed message. Let’s just stop putting toxic chemicals in the ground to begin with.

Advice to doctors it goes onto say; This product is not an inhibitor of cholinesterase which is basically denying studies that show it inhibits an enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which as we know can cause neurological concerns.

CONCLUSION

This is a huge area in need of awareness and more research so I invite you to start your own research by questioning where your food comes from for starters. I’ve dedicated many years in creating awareness that will impact our nation’s focus on disease prevention. I am so grateful I had that curiosity years ago, as it changed my life, my health and my appreciation for old school ways of farming. Just as we give our kids the nutrition and support they need to grow into healthy, productive adults with a purpose, we should also support our food systems that fuel them.

Buy foods packaged in glass rather than plastic or cans to reduce your family’s exposure to endocrine disrupting BPA – bisphenol A, also linked to cancers.

You can see here that I have frozen hot peppers that I got at the Farmer’s Market. Too many to use immediately, so I froze them. The secret is keeping the lid off until the food is frozen. When you defrost, make sure you do it slowly so you don’t crack the glass.  Do not immerse the cold glass jar into hot water.
 
Never microwave in plastic, even if it says “microwave safe.” Heat can release plastic chemicals into your food and drink. Living an anti-cancer lifestyle requires never letting your food touch plastic!

When transitioning from lawns to sustainable landscaping, the last thing we want to create is a “Cancer Cluster” in our neighborhoods, cities and towns.

The international scientific community announced two very loud wake-up calls in March 2016.

First, the U.N. World Health Organization’s prestigious International Agency for Research on Cancer released a consensus report that RoundUp is a “probable carcinogen.” A few days later, a team of international scientists based in New Zealand reported that RoundUp can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance in disease-causing bacteria.

In addition to these findings, there’s a growing body of evidence of health impacts associated with exposure to RoundUp such as endocrine disruption, organ damage and birth defects. The facts are established: Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide is harmful to humans and animals.

Most of the cotton production in the U.S. is genetically modified cotton that is resistant to RoundUp. The cotton is sprayed with RoundUp when the bud is open and the RoundUp/glyphosate is condensed and goes straight into the product.

RoundUp is the most popular weed killer in the U.S. and Roundup Ready cotton, soy and corn crops have been genetically modified to withstand applications of the RoundUp – but we cannot withstand this toxin without experiencing health effects! Do we want to contribute to this resistance? Let us heed Rachel Carson’s 1962 warning! Today’s experts are saying RoundUp is worse than DDT.

The U.S. and Canada are conducting formal reviews of RoundUp’s safety, lawsuits are pending, and some groups are calling for a global ban.

The European Union Parliament voted to ban RoundUp for most uses in April 2016; 30,000 of Argentina’s doctors have demanded Roundup be banned because it is associated with spontaneous abortions, birth defects, skin disease, neurological disease and respiratory illness.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the France-based cancer research arm of the World Health Organization, said RoundUp has been found in the blood and urine of agricultural workers, showing the chemical has been absorbed by the body. A summary of this study was published in The Lancet Oncology.

I do think landscape companies are unethical that offer RoundUp as a viable solution for our transition to drought tolerant landscaping. Why endanger the ground water when we are trying to save ground water???

Please consider the health of humans, pets, wildlife, bees and other pollinating insects – not to mention property values if cancer rates skyrocket in your community creating a “Cancer Cluster.” There are safe and sustainable options to RoundUp.

RoundUp has killed off most of the Milkweed plant across our nation, and it’s the only plant Monarch caterpillars eat while fattening up to become butterflies. I plant Milkweed in my yard to give the Monarchs food and a place to lay their eggs.

Let’s give Monarchs and our Self a helping hand by demanding our local stores stop selling RoundUp. Boycotts are a good call in this situation. Let your local store owners know that you will be back when they discontinue these products.

I called my local Ace Hardware that I rely on often, spoke to the manager, and let her know that local health and our water supply trumps corporate policy. I will not shop there as long as RoundUp is on their shelves.

She had some good advice for us to get started:

  • Switch out a product or a room at a time with safer healthier products.
  • “Fragrance” means synthetic, made in a lab with petrochemicals.Fragrances can cause health problems, neurotoxicity, headaches and breathing problems. Synthetic Fragrances are irritants, allergens, and can cause Asthma. The good news is most Asthma is preventable.
  • Safely wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.Triclosan in Anti-Bacterial Soaps, Toothpastes, and Fabrics may be associated with endocrine and hormonal toxicity, allergenic effects, organ toxicity, eye and skin irritation, and is suspected of being a carcinogen and environmental toxin.

Rebecca Spector at the Centor for Food Safety InterviewWe interviewed Rebecca Spector, West Coast Director at the Center for Food Safety. Listen and learn about food issues and how to join with her to change our world.

Rebecca ran an organic farm for ten years, and she studied organics and environmental issues in college. California farming showed her the intersection between the environment and farming.

In our interview, Rebecca talked about how we can avoid GMO foods by avoiding 5 specific crops: Corn, Soy, Canola, Cotton, Sugar Beets, and GE Alphalfa mostly used for animal feed.

Myth: 80% of our food is GMO. This myth refers to processed foods. Whole foods that we buy fresh are primarily not GMO. Processed foods like crackers and breads with lots of ingredient or made with corn, soy and canola may very well contain GMOs. We now have the availability of foods with the “No GMO” label. Look for them at your healthy food stores.

Hear Rebecca talk about the connection between GMO crops and allergens. GMOs create new allergens by splicing one food into another. This will result in an allergic reaction in the final product if a person is allergic to the food that was spliced in.

Good News! So many countries around the world require GMO labeling, or they have banned GMO crops all together! The numbers increase almost weekly, and you can get involved by joining with Center for Food Safety.

COP21 Highlights – Women and Action

Cop21 HighlightsWorld leaders and global activists have met to finalize a climate agreement at the Paris Climate Summit COP21. This is a pivotal point for environmental politics and  how individuals and communities can take action to support the planet. Here are some COP21 Highlights:

Women and Gender Constituency – Over the past several years of international climate change negotiations, it has been established and agreed by governments across the world, who are Parties toCOP21, that gender equality and ensuring women’s human rights are necessary to effectively act on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Women were active at COP21 both inside the meetings and outside in the streets and many organizing meetings that brought global activists together in protest and negotiations.

North Dakota indigenous leader Kandi Mossett: “We are sacrifice zones” – Man camps are where thousands of men live in hovels. They’re FEMA trailers or RV parks or wherever they can find space. Man camps are in what used to be wheat fields or a sunflower fields that are now oil-fracking operations. As a result, we’ve seen an great increase in crime, violence, and drug abuse. I have buried two young girls, my friends, this last year, who got addicted to the heroin, because we now have organized crime. As far as the environmental toxins, we won’t even feel the effects for 20 years. And I’m so worried that at this COP21 my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter won’t have a say, but she will be experiencing the worst impacts. And it just doesn’t make any sense to me that this is the 21st COP and we are considered sacrifice zones in my community.

COP21 HighlightsClimate Justice Movement “Extremely Disappointed” in COP21 Draft’s “Failure to Set Up” – Chee Yoke Ling, legal adviser to the Third World Network, based in Beijing: “There’s no agreement, actually, because the question is: How do we share? How do we share the responsibility of doing the actions that will bring us to 1.5? Many vulnerable countries, small island states, and even some of the bigger developing countries want strong action. But the 1.5 has to be in the context of actions that are fair, so that the rich and those who can do more should do their share, and then the poor should be helped to actually do their share. So what we see here, to get to the 1.5, where everybody is treated the same, where we see the rich countries, like the United States and the European countries or Japan, saying that they will try to do their best, on a voluntary basis, and they’re backing off from what they agreed to do 20 years ago. They are not cutting emissions at home, in Europe or North America. They are not going to give money to help other countries do it. So, 1.5 is a nice number, but how do you get to 1.5 in terms of real actions?”

Young Feminist Day at the Women and Gender Caucus: Alina Saba – Thailand, Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law & Development: “Living with climate change is a reality, it keeps us awake at night. Climate Change is further pushing us into a cycle of inequality. We are trading away our life.” Report from WEDO *Women, Environment & Development Organization begun by Bella Abzug): The room was filled with engaged participants eager to hear the voices of young feminists who participated and hope to continue the conversation and establish a young feminist working group in order to ensure that all generations are included in climate change negotiations, international policies, and advocacy spaces.

Cop21 Highlights naomi kleinNaomi Klein Decries Climate Deal as Extraordinarily Dangerous – “We know, from the paltry levels of financing that wealthy governments have brought to the table, that COP21 is going to steamroll over equity red lines, which means that wealthy countries that have been emitting fossil fuels on an industrial scale for a couple hundred years will continue to fail to do our fair share of emission reductions, or pay our fair share for the impacts of that, for loss and damage caused by climate change, and also the resources that are badly needed so that poorer countries can leapfrog over fossil fuels and the car culture, and go directly to renewable energy, community-controlled renewable energy, energy democracy. It takes resources and technology transfers to happen. We also know that it’s going to steamroll over our legal red lines, because the U.S. has come to these negotiations announcing that the deal cannot be legally binding. Any talk of penalties was off the table before it even began.

Jane Goodall at COP21: “I’m Here to Save the Rainforests” COP21 Highlights– “Our misuse of fossil fuels, the emissions—from agriculture, from industry, from households—the vast impact that’s being made by this intensive farming of animals. And in order to feed the billions and billions of cows and pigs and chickens, even if you don’t care about the cruelty, even if you refuse to admit that these are individuals with feelings, who feel pain and have emotions, even if you don’t admit that, you have to admit huge areas of forest are cut down to grow grain to feed them. Intensive cattle grazing is turning forests to woodland, to scrubland. And food in one end, gas out both ends, that’s methane. And that’s an even more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. It’s about 36 percent of all methane emissions come from this intensive farming.”

Greenland Glaciologist Says, Voluntary Pledges Aren’t Enough 
“What we need to be talking about is the atmospheric carbon level that we can tolerate. And unfortunately, it’s too high now, so the conversation, the missing conversation, is also about atmospheric drawdown of carbon. And that’s why I bring up trees and grasslands and restoring growing parts of our planet. We’ve lost one-third of arable land on our planet in the last 50 years. We need to start reversing that. And we can bring humidification back to the Mediterranean. The Roman Empire began deforesting the Mediterranean long ago, and that desertification trend is behind the drought. And we can actually begin reversing that. And it actually—besides bringing moisture back to some of these places and sequestering carbon, it also gives people hope. And it can be a gesture of peace that we can offer around the world.”

COP21 HighlightsGreenpeace commissioned 80 activists from Germany, France and Belgium to paint a large, yellow sun on Paris’ Etoile — the roundabout that encircles the Arc de Triomphe. They used washable paint that isn’t environmentally harmful.

Today, 12/12/15, climate activists are protesting in the streets of Paris, calling all of us to action.

Paris isn’t the end of the story, but a conclusion of a particular chapter. Now, it’s up to us to strengthen these promises, make sure they are kept, and then accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and toward 100% renewable energy. Videos from Paris here.

UN Urges Global Shift Toward Vegan DietThe UN reports: “Less consumption of animal products is necessary to save the world from the worst impacts of climate change. A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and climate change.”

– The UN Urges Global Shift Toward Vegan Diet because a substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.”

– Moving to Meat & Dairy-Free Diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change as the global population surges toward a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050. Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products.

– U.S. diets rich in meat and dairy are unsustainable. Rising affluence is triggering a shift in our diets toward more meat and dairy products. Environmental impacts rise roughly 80% with a doubling of income. Agriculture, particularly meat and dairy products, accounts for 70% of global freshwater consumption, 38% of the total land use and 19% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

UN Urges Global Shift Toward Vegan Diet Biomass (animal waste) and crops for animal food are as damaging as burning fossil fuels. Livestock consumes much of the world’s crops and a great deal of freshwater, fertilizers and pesticides. Animal products cause more damage than producing construction sand or cement, plastics or metals.

The UN report cites the following pressures on the environment as priorities for governments around the world: climate change, habitat change, wasteful use of nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilisers, over-exploitation of fisheries, forests and other resources, invasive species, unsafe drinking water and sanitation, lead exposure, urban air pollution and occupational exposure to particulate matter.

Green and Healthy Holiday Kitchen Tips

winter owl We are all trying to eat and live a healthier and greener lifestyle. Here are some green and healthy holiday kitchen tips for you and your family during this wintery time of the year:

 
Choose recipes that call for lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat the Rainbow of antioxidant colored foods. Wash them with water and a few drops of vinegar or lemon.
Choose organic foods when you can, these are also non-GMO which is a big plus until we get more labeling legislated.
 
Green and Healthy Holiday Kitchen TipsKitchen clean-up can be green too! Try natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda and water. Make your own DIY cleaner or buy it healthy. An easy and very economical cleaner that I use for kitchen counters, mirrors, etc., is turning your vinegar bottle into a spray cleaning bottle by attaching a sprayer from an empty spray bottle. They fit the glass vinegar bottles! Add water and a small amount of any vinegar and you have a very effective, versitile and economical cleaner.
 
Select organic meats and dairy to limit exposure to hormones and antibiotics creating resistant strains of bacteria. Meat production is the biggest creator of climate change and the destruction of our lands and seas, so limit eating meat and dairy and consider becoming a vegan. See our favorite book on this subject below.
 
Use cast iron, stainless steel and ceramic cookware. Non-Stick pans release Perfluorochemicals into food and air, and have been linked to cancer.
 
 
Buy foods packaged in glass rather than plastic or cans to reduce your family’s exposure to endocrine disrupting BPA – bisphenol A, also linked to cancers.
diy freeze in glass jarsStore leftovers in glass. The chemical additives in plastic can migrate into foods and liquids. You CAN freeze in glass jars! You can see here that I have frozen hot peppers that I got at the Farmer’s Market. Too many to use immediately, so I froze them. The secret is keeping the lid off until the food is frozen. When you defrost, make sure you do it slowly so you don’t crack the glass.  Do not immerse the cold glass jar into hot water.
 
Never microwave in plastic, even if it says “microwave safe.” Heat can release plastic chemicals into your food and drink. Living an anti-cancer lifestyle requires never letting your food touch plastic!

Live an AntiCancer Lifestyle

I am convinced that in this day and age with chemicals in everything we eat, breathe and wear, that in order to prevent cancer, we want to Live an AntiCancer Lifestyle.

It is possible, and a lot of us are already doing it. Take the fear out of the word “Cancer” by ridding your life of carcinogens and strengthening your immune system. By eating well, exercising and consuming consciously, we can cure the disease if it does occur, or prevent it entirely. With the fear of cancer gone, we won’t be forced into surgery, chemotherapy and radiation before we have a chance to investigate the alternatives. We can research natural remedies that are specific to different cancers, or are overall cancer cures. We can witness the stories of people around the world who have used these cures and be profoundly strengthened through our own process by knowing we are not alone in this journey.

Here are some tips for Living an AntiCancer Lifestyle:

  • living an anticancer lifestyleEat the Rainbow – the colors in foods fight and prevent cancer. It’s true that the colors in our fruits and vegetables are indeed cancer curing, cancer fighting, and add to our longevity and overall health. This time of the year, many colorful fruits and vegetables come available that weren’t there in the Spring and Summer. Enjoy learning new recipes for winter squash and add many new spices and herbes to soups and salads. Tumeric, green tea, and Resveratrol fight cancer at it’s stemcell root so it doesn’t metastasize. Eating the Rainbow adds a whole new palate to our meals every season!
  • Eat locally grown organic foods in season. Of course, organic foods are preferred, and some foods are especially important to buy organic, like apples, strawberries and potatoes. (See the whole “Dirty Dozen” list here.) Buying organics in bulk help us to get the price down, and growing as much of our food ourselves that is absolutely possible adds to the quality of our life and our connection to Mother Nature.
  • look for non-gmo certification to live an anticancer lifestyleEat GMO-Free foods – look for certification. GMO foods are created by adding carcinogenicchemicals and organisms of other plants and animals. Our own DNA can be altered by these genetically modified frankenfoods. They are also designed to blow open the bellies of the insects that might eat the plants. The result is that today we have a much higher rates of gluten sensitivity and leaky gut syndrome in humans and livestock than ever before.
  • Sugar feeds cancer cells – eat as little of it as possible – and NO artificial sweeteners. Cancer cannot live without sugar, and each of us consumes large amounts of sugars unless we mindfully decide to limit our consumption. For me, this is my most difficult journey. Eating gluten free also adds a lot of useless sugars to our diet if we are not careful. And please research artificial sweeteners if you are not already aware of their serious health effects, including obesity.
  • Good fats are a better form of energy than sweets. Good fats like coconut oil give us a much better afternoon energy spurt than any candy, ice cream, or pastry ever will.  If it’s energy you are looking for, go for the good fats.
  • exercise regularly for an anticancer lifestyleOxygen kills cancer cells so exercise regularly. Cancer cells cannot live in oxygen nor an alkaline environment. Many of our foods are acidic, so it’s very important to balance our Ph through our diet. Exercising is a great way to oxygenate every cell in our body, as well as drinking filtered and even alkaline water.​
  • Cook with stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic – NOT non-stick or aluminium cookware. The manufacture of non-stick cookware even destroys our ozone, so you know it can’t be good to cook in. We only have to look at how our grandmothers cooked using cast iron skillets and ceramic bakeware to see how they lived to  be old and wise! Add these wonderful olde cooking tools to your kitchen, along with stainless steel — and toss out the aluminium and non-stick cookware — and you will be serving up delicious and healthy meals.

For me, this is the most important take-away from our Lean Into Green Telesummit. Wax paper is available again in healthy food markets, and with the help of saved rubber bands, it is possible to keep leftovers fresh in the fridge. Wax paper or cloth food bags also work for lunches and food storage. This isn’t as difficult as it may seem, and it adds to the mindfulness of our eating and food prep activities.
  • Be really particular what you put on your face and body, it’s all absorbed into your liver and other organs. This includes hair products and nail polishes. There’s a lot of carcinogens in these products. Shop carefully and read labels. Check out our natural beauty products here.

Why Vegan? There’s More to Climate Change than Fossil Fuels

Why Vegan? Animal Agriculture and Forest DestructionDid you know that the key actors in climate change are cows, pigs, and chickens! Animal Agriculture is THE leading cause of environmental destruction, ocean dead zones, habitat destruction, and species extinction.

I thought that if I drove less and showered less, if I ate organic and used fewer plastic bags, I could turn climate change around for my daughters and future generations. What I really need to do is stop eating meat and dairy for a real and faster return to climate stabilization and environmental sustainability.

Why Vegan?

Animal Agriculture produces more greenhouse gasses than all cars, trucks, trains, boats and planes combined.

Methane gas from livestock is 86 times more destructive than carbon from vehicles. Animal Agriculture produces 65% of the world’s nitrous oxide, a gas with a global warming potential 296 times greater than Co2. 

If we reduce the amount of methane emissions from Animal Agriculture, the level in the atmosphere goes down within decades. If we reduce the amount of Co2 emissions from our transportation needs, we won’t see a reduction in the atmosphere for 100 years.

Why Vegan? Dead zones are often caused by the decay of algae during algal blooms, like this one off the coast of La Jolla, San Diego, California.The health of our oceans also begins with animal Agriculture.

Farm animal waste produced by land based animal agriculture (116,000 lbs produced every second in the U.S. alone) has created more than 500 nitrogen-flooded dead zones around the world in our oceans, comprising more than 95,000 sq miles of areas completely devoid of life.

Why aren’t Greenpeace, Surfrider Foundation, Oceana, and other sea-loving organizations focusing on Animal Agriculture? They believe it would hurt their fundraising.

One hamburger uses 660 gallons of water to produce — that’s 2 months of showers!

30% of the world’s water, and 55% of U.S. water, is used for animal agriculture. The average Californian uses 1500 gallons of water per day. Half is related to the consumption of meat and dairy products. Animals eat water intensive grains and these are part of the water footprint of that meat or dairy product.

Animal Agriculture consumes 34 trillion gallons of water per year. Fracking uses 100 billion gallons per year.

Why Vegan? Smoke from man made forest fires to clear land for cattle or crops.Cattle ranching is the the leading cause of rain forest loss.

One acre of rain forest is cleared every second to to graze animals and grow their feed crops. 136 million acres lost to date. Every day almost 100 species are lost due to rain forest destruction.

Livestock are a major driver of global trends in land-use including deforestation (the conversion of forest to pasture and cropland), desertification, and the release of carbon from cultivated soils.

Is the Problem Over Population or Animal Agriculture?

– The world’s 7 billion humans raise 70 billion farm animals.
– The world’s humans drink 5.2 billion gallons of water daily. The world’s 1.5 billion cows drink 45 billion gallons of water daily.
– The world humans eat 21 billion pounds of food daily. The world’s 1.5 billion cows eat 135 billion pounds of food daily.
– Nearly half of U.S. land is dedicated to animal Agriculture.

Globally, livestock production and consumption and contribute:

35% of methane (296 times times the Global Warming Potential of CO2). What this means is that if we stopped eating meat today, the planet would recover in a few decades  vs. the 100+ years recovery will take by reducing oil and gas emissions.

80% of agricultural methane emissions (2.2 billion tons of manure per year). If you’ve ever driven past a cattle farm you know what the stench means to passers by and the families who live and work near these factory farms.

This is the quote that put all the pieces together for me:

“You can’t be an environmentalist and eat animal products, period.”

Fossil fuels are not the problem Animal Agriculture is. I recently watched a film titled Cowspiracy on Netflix. It changed my priorities and my dietary choices. I interviewed Carol Adams and Lisa Kemmerer for our recent Feminism and Sustainability Telesummit, they tried to educate me/us on the impact of Animal Agriculture on climate change, but I didn’t get it. Cowspiracy got me, and I’m glad it did!

“Animal Agriculture is the alcoholic in the family no one wants to talk about. Raising and killing animals for food is what’s killing the planet — not driving our cars, and taking showers.”

Eating vegan can be as difficult as being an informed citizen. Dairy and meat are as available to us as violence on t.v. If we want a better world we have to educate ourselves, and our love for the world can’t be casual. I have gone off the vegan wagon a few times now, I’ve made a few attempts. Cowspiracy has helped me to get serious and join my granddaughters in their vegan lifestyle. I know I will be healthier and happier for it. I know I will be a better world citizen. And I know my spirit will be more at peace with my professional goals.

What is Your Plastic Footprint?Step by step you can create a plan to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and create less plastic waste.

Plastic toxins mimic Estrogen, and your body takes these toxins to all the places you use Estrogen. Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that is added to hard plastics, water bottles, baby bottles, dental fillings, DVDs, linings of food cans and household goods — is an endocrine/hormone disruptor . BPA has been linked to reproductive disorders, heart disease, asthma, breast cancer and memory problems.

What is Your Plastic Footprint?Here are  some tips to help you avoid plastics in your life:

1. Never let your food touch plastic. This is revolutionary! And a really important way to reduce your family’s exposure to the toxins that leach from plastic containers into your food — especially when the food is put into the containers while it is warm!

2. Don’t cook with plastic utensils. Why contaminate all those organic ingredients by stirring them with plastic spoons and spatulas that leach toxins into your otherwise healthy meals??

3. Choose natural gum alternatives like ginger chews, fennel seeds or mint leaves. Most chewing gums are made out of a plastic called polyvinyl acetate, manufactured using vinyl acetate, a chemical shown to cause tumors in lab rats.

4. Ask your Barista to fill your reusable cup or thermos. Plastic cups are often made of polystyrene, and you won’t be the first person to bring your own thermos or car mug.

5. Use reusable bamboo, metal or glass straws — or none at all.

6. Bringing your reusable containers to restaurants when you go out to eat is one great way to avoid disposable packaging and exposing your warm leftovers to plastic containers.

7. Carry your own bamboo or metal cutlery to avoid plastic utensils. And remember to ask for no plastic cutlery for your take out orders. We usually never use it, and it collects in our drawers and eventually becomes landfill that never biodegrades.

8. Rent or borrow items from family, friends and neighbors that you rarely use or only need for a one time use. This helps to reduce plastics used in manufacturing.

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor spaces. Here are some tips to improve indoor air quality in your home and office:

– Open your windows daily.

As soon as the weather warms up, open your windows and let in that fresh air. When the weather is still cool, open them up during the warmest part of the day for a fresh invigorating breath of fresh air. When the days are going to be hot, open your windows early in the morning, and then close them up to keep the house cool. Nature’s air conditioning is the safest and most refreshing.

African Violets to help clean your indoor air quality– Bring plants indoors, they actually create clean air.

There are any number of flowering and non-flowering plants that do well indoors and are not toxic to cats and dogs. My favorite at the moment are African Violets which I am actually getting to rebloom with a product named VF11 that can be used indoors and out to increase flowering. The secret with orchids and African violets is not to overwater. Once a week is enough, and test the soil to make sure it is dry before watering. These plants are natural to rainforest where the ground is sheltered from direct hot sun, so mimic that environment for your plants if they are not friends with hot sunny windows.

2015 UN Year of Soils. Soil, where food begins.Soil – The Nearly Forgotten Resource. The top six inches of soil are the most precious.

Without healthy soil, life on earth would be unsustainable. Soil is the foundation of agriculture, and the largest pool of organic carbon essential for mitigating and adapting to climate change.

New approaches must be adopted. As much as one-third of all soils are degraded due to:

– erosion
– compaction
– soil sealing
– salinization
– soil organic matter and nutrient depletion
– acidification
– pollution
– other processes caused by unsustainable land management practices

It takes up to 1,000 years to form one centimetre of soil. Investment in sustainable soil management is be cheaper than restoration and is needed for the achievement of food security and nutrition, climate change adaptation and mitigation and overall sustainable development.

– Soils are the foundation of agriculture. They provide vital ecosystem services and the basis for food, feed, fuel, fibre and medical products important for human well-being.

– Soils are fundamental for the appropriate storage and distribution of water.

– 1/4 of the world’s biodiversity lives underground, where, for example, the earthworm is a giant alongside tiny organisms such as bacteria and fungi.

– Organisms and plant roots act as the primary agents driving nutrient cycling and help plants by improving nutrient intake — in turn supporting above-ground biodiversity.

– Organisms boost soil’s ability to absorb carbon and mitigate desertification, so that even more carbon can be sequestered.

Among the most urgent priorities is to update, standardize and render accessible the world’s knowledge of soil types and distribution. One of FAO’s priorities is to establish a global soil information system that could assist with reliable data decision-making regarding soil management.

Natural Egg Dyes from Veggies & Herbs

Natural Easter Egg Colors with veggies and herbsHere are some fun recipes for vibrant all natural egg dyes made from veggies and herbs you have in your refrigerator and cupboards.

We used the dry outer onion skins last year and the result was beautiful eggs that looked like carved mahogany! Have fun with these recipes and methods, and improve upon them each Spring. You will be amazed.

Here’s how you begin:

1) Room Temperature eggs so they don’t crack when boiling
2) 2 cups of water plus 1 Tsp vinegar to hold the color
3) Bring water to a boil with colorants and fully hard boil eggs for 12 to 15 minutes
4) Remove eggs and pour colorant and colored water into a jar (or bowl)
5) Put eggs into the jar so they are covered with colorants and colored water
6) Let the jars cool then place in refrigerator 24 hours
7) Remove the eggs, rinse, and polish with vegetable oil

Ideas for Vegetable & Herbal Colorants:

Green: 3 TBS Dill and 3 Dry Outer Red Onion Skins
Yellow: 2-3 TBS Turmeric and/or a lot less Saffron
Gold: Espresso or 3 TBS Dill Seed
Mahogany: Red Onion Skins and/or 1 TBS Paprika
Light Blue: Spinach
Dark Blue: 6-8 Red Cabbage Leaves
Purple: Cranberry and Raspberry Juice or Red Zinger Tea Bags
Orange: 4 Carrot Tops and 4 Yellow Onion Skins
Textured Shell: Red Wine will form crystals on the shell

Colors will vary depending on whether you use white, brown or pastel eggs, so mix and match your colorants to experiment with your own unique colors!

Wrapping cooled hard boiled eggs with rubber bands before placing back into the colorant will give you stripped eggs.

You can also very carefully color designs on the raw eggs with crayons or wax, make a small hole at both ends, blow out the insides of the eggs, dye them, and then spray with a sealant to keep these decorated beauties a long time! The sealants are not edible.

#2 When your existing inefficient hoses and sprinkler heads need replacing, buy water saving ones. Ask your local family owned nursery or hardware store what options they have available.
#3 In drought areas especially, think about replacing your brown lawns with drought tolerant plants, beautiful rock gardens, and even a vegetable garden so at least your outdoor water use is producing food.
#4 Share the water conservation methods you learn and use with your friends, family, neighbors and landlords. Everyone is willing to join in the efforts to save our planet, most of us just need more information.
#5 Take the “Dirty Car Pledge” and wait 60 days or more — until absolutely necessary!

This October, we are changing the discussion from Awareness to Prevention

New scientific evidence is emerging daily, making it clear that the chemicals in our environment play a role in altering our biological processes. It’s clear that our exposures to toxic chemicals and radiation are connected to our cancer risk.  But we rarely hear about this new scientific evidence.  

It is difficult to examine and address the effects of individual chemicals and their risks for a disease as complex as cancer. The time between exposures and development of the disease may be decades. We may not know which chemicals we’ve been exposed to, and we are not exposed to chemicals in isolation.

Preventing Cancer Telesummit: Exposing the Environmental Causes

What if Everyone Became a Vegetarian?

Climate Change oftentimes feels like a catastrophe too big to make a difference on a personal lifestyle level. But if we take just one piece, one of the major contributors: The meat industry directly and indirectly produces about 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. As population grows, and we eat more animal products, the consequences for climate change, pollution, and land use could be catastrophic.

What if Everyone became Vegetarian?What if everyone became a vegetarian, and the global community came to eat less meat, no meat, or no animal products at all? Universal vegetarianism or veganism would go a long way toward mitigating climate change, and at a much lower cost than carbon taxes and renewable energy technology:

– Agriculture-related carbon emissions reduced by 17%

– Methane emissions reduced by 24%

– Nitrous oxide emissions reduced by 21%

– The economy would tank. Livestock production accounts for 1.4 percent of the world’s total GDP and 1.3 billion jobs.

– Industrial farmers who grow corn to feed animals on factory farms would shift to in-demand plant-based food production (fruit and vegetables).

– Expanses of new land would become available and at a cheaper price: grazing land is 26% of the world’s ice-free land surface – plus 386,000 sq mi of land is used to grow crops for livestock.

– The risk of antibiotic-resistant infections would plummet – at least 2 million Americans fall ill from antibiotic-resistant pathogens every year.

We can all stop giving our money to factory farms, the biggest and worst offenders from a pollution and public health perspective. We can eat less meat than we currently do, especially meat from methane-releasing ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) We will be giving the market time to adjust to our change of lifestyle. With the world’s population slated to grow to 9 billion by 2050, we will need to take some of the 25 percent of the world’s land area back from the cows.

Baby steps:

– meatless Monday
– vegan before 6pm
– fake chicken
– vegie burgers

Be creative in helping your child to create her own costume and theme. Choose a costume that fits snugly and is the right length for her height. Flowing costumes can easily snag on objects and other people, and can be dangerous around open flames.

Keep your child’s neck area clear, and avoid jewelry, cords, sashes, anything that could pose a choking hazard. Skip the capes, they can pose strangulation risks, and could get caught on something or cause a child to trip.

Use masks cautiously. Don’t  have your child wear them when walking. Many masks can obstruct a child’s vision, especially when it’s dark at night. Check to make sure that he can breathe comfortably. Read face paint labels. A great alternative to masks is face paint, but make sure you read labels carefully and choose a face paint that is FDA-approved and meant for use on skin (non-toxic doesn’t necessarily means it’s safe for use on the face).

Ditch the accessories so that she has a free hand to carry her candy and another to hold your hand, especially while crossing the street or while walking on crowded sidewalks.

Adults, carry a flash light with you while trick or treating to light the path and also allow motorists to see your trick-or-treaters.

Wear shows your child is used to, or opt for safe footwear not the cheap, plastic kind that have no traction and could cause a child to slip and fall, or if it’s the boot-cover type that is made out of fabric or rubber, make sure it’s fitted securely so that it doesn’t slip off and pose a tripping hazard.

Have fun, and remember this is the season when Grandmothers past are close again and blessing us with their wisdom!
