 The Organic Difference

Sandi Star has been eating and recommending organic foods for some time. It’s an important part of her service as a Health Practitioner. She believes it’s  important for us to know why we would go to the store and pay more for our food:

Can we justify our commitment to preventative medicine, which is what food is supposed to be.

We pay for your health now by buying organic and non-GMO food, or we pay later in health care costs. This is what Sandi Star tells her patients. She believes that our food needs to be our medicine because good nutrition is what makes our body thrive. Sandi doesn’t think enough of us are questioning where our food comes from, or that we have a good understanding about the toxic affects that Monsanto’s GMOs have on our diets.

PESTICIDES ARE AN ESTIMATED $35 BILLION INDUSTRY ACCOUNTING FOR MORE THAN 2.5 MILLION TONNES OF CHEMICALS DEPOSITED INTO THE ENVIRONMENT ANNUALLY

EAT ORGANIC – THE INSIDE SCOOP:

When it comes to Monsanto’s RoundUp, remember non-organic animals are fed grains and foods that are sprayed with RoundUp — and we are eating what they ate — RoundUp is present in the muscle of meat. Cows are rapidly fattened up with grain-based feeds, usually made with a base of soy or corn. The conventionally raised cows are often given drugs and hormones to grow faster, as well as antibiotics to survive the unsanitary living conditions. Cows are meant to eat grass which gives them a lot of Omega’s in the meat whereas cows fed grains cause inflammation in our body. Big difference.

There are new antibiotic rules for 2017 you might have seen news about that are worth a further look. Farmers are being required to work with a Veterinarian to treat their livestock with antibiotics. Antibiotics and hormones are a serious issue within the meat industry because farmers are now obtaining antibiotics without a prescription. We have to question the integrity and expertise of each veterinarian working with farmers and hope they use these drugs only when necessary. Remember, antibiotics are prohibited in organic farming. Organic Farmers take care of the environment by allowing the cows to graze in fields as opposed to keeping them confined where disease can easily spread.

The National Organic Program (NOP) develops the rules and regulations for the production, handling, labeling, and enforcement of all USDA organic products. This process, involves input from the National Organic Standards Board (a Federal Advisory Committee made up of fifteen members of the public) and the public.

WE GET MORE NUTRITION EATING ORGANIC!

Here are some studies:

In a 2002 University of Missouri study, chemists were shocked to discover that smaller, organically grown, oranges delivered 30 percent more vitamin C than the large conventionally grown ones. Certified nutritionist Virginia Worthington found that a serving of organic lettuce, spinach, carrots, potatoes, and cabbage provided the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, but not so for the same veggies grown by conventional farming.

Worthington reported that organically grown fruits and vegetables outpaced their conventional counterparts with as much as 27% more vitamin C, 21% more iron, 29%t more magnesium, 13.6% more phosphorus, and 18% more polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of plant compounds such as bioflavonoids, flavanols, and pycnogenols. They are anti-inflammatory and have a wide range of health benefits, including protection against allergies, arthritis, heart disease, cancer and more. The organics also showed 15% fewer nitrates and heavy metals than the conventional foods.

Here’s another interesting point. These phytonutrients, such as polyphenols and antioxidants, protect both people and plants. Pesticides — insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides — actually block a plant’s ability to manufacture these important plant compounds. Without them, plants are handicapped and too weak to fight off pests. The organic farmer, on the other hand, builds up these important nutrients by feeding the soil, emboldening the plants to naturally defend themselves against pests and disease.

In a study of antioxidants in organic and conventionally grown fruits, scientists found higher concentrations of valuable vitamin C, vitamin E, and other antioxidants in the organic foods. They theorized that the organically grown fruits developed more antioxidants as a defense and repair mechanism against insects when grown without the use of pesticides.

A 2007 study by researchers at the University of California-Davis, for example, found that organic tomatoes had nearly twice as much flavonoids as industrial tomatoes. Flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease. The UC-Davis study suggested that industrial tomatoes may have fewer of the metabolites because they are over-fertilized. When researchers at Washington State University compared organic strawberries and industrial ones, they found that the organic berries had 8.5% higher antioxidant activity, 9.7& more ascorbic acid, and 10.5% more phenolic than industrial berries. Finally, a January 2011 study published in the Journal of Dairy Science found that milk from cows raised organically in the UK had higher levels of beneficial fatty acids.

THE DIRECT TOXICITY OF ROUNDUP/GLYPHOSATE

Glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) is presented by Monsanto as a benign chemical for weed control which is inactivated in the soil. However, this is far from the case. Glyphosate interferes with enzymes in plants and microbes because of its ability to chelate (bind) trace metals and by its antibiotic action (RoundUp is patented for both). Other chemicals used in formulated products sold to farmers and gardeners enhance RoundUp’s toxic effects.

Commonly claimed to be only present in higher plants for production of essential amino acids, alkaloids etc., WRONG – important – microbiota in soils supports plant growth mineral uptake mammals supports gut organisms,

GLYPHOSATE: A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL BIOLOGICAL MOLECULE :

Kills SOIL bacteria, compromising soil quality and plant growth.

Kills GUT bacteria – compromising digestion, contributing or leading to Leaky Gut/Gut Permeability, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Autism, Obesity, Cancer and Endocrine Disruption.

I could go on and on. There is a lot of research showing the toxic effects of RoundUp despite Monsanto’s continuing claims that it is safe. RoundUp is not safe and there are numerous studies that prove it.

ROUNDUP INGREDIENTS:

I looked up the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet) on Round Up and found the following:

Active ingredient Potassium salt of N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine; {Potassium salt of glyphosate} Composition COMPONENT CAS No. % by weight (approximate) Potassium salt of glyphosate 70901-12-1 49

Other ingredients 51. The specific chemical identity is being withheld because it is trade secret information of Monsanto Company. Needed to put that in bold!

Now doesn’t every ingredient in everything else that has to do with food legally have to be disclosed? This is interesting because on the MSDS it clearly states Do NOT contaminate water when disposing of rinse waters. That alone would make me nervous to try it on food and one of the obvious reasons to go organic.

It also has a list of ECOLOGICAL information showing the toxic effects on our ecological system. It goes on to say it is “practically nontoxic” to our honey bee. What do they mean by “practically” anyhow? My question would be then why are we losing so many of these bees and what else could possibly be doing it? According to Monsanto’s website they are working with organizations to save the bees which puts out a mixed message. Let’s just stop putting toxic chemicals in the ground to begin with.

Advice to doctors it goes onto say; This product is not an inhibitor of cholinesterase which is basically denying studies that show it inhibits an enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which as we know can cause neurological concerns.

CONCLUSION

This is a huge area in need of awareness and more research so I invite you to start your own research by questioning where your food comes from for starters. I’ve dedicated many years in creating awareness that will impact our nation’s focus on disease prevention. I am so grateful I had that curiosity years ago, as it changed my life, my health and my appreciation for old school ways of farming. Just as we give our kids the nutrition and support they need to grow into healthy, productive adults with a purpose, we should also support our food systems that fuel them.

Your Family’s Health Matters! Summer is bringing bugs, ants, fleas, flies, moths, weevils and silverfish. They can be a nuisance for sure, and there are natural non-toxic solutions!

Don’t put your family’s health at risk. Hot weather natural pest control is easy and easily available. Here are some tips and information to guide you:

Very similar to the RoundUp/Glyphosate studies:

Common Insect Repellents – Insect studies show that pyrethroid exposure affects the brain and nervous system, increases thyroid and liver cancers, damages male reproductive organs, and reduces testosterone levels and fertility. The Cancer Assessment Review Committee classified pyrethrins as “likely human carcinogens” if ingested.

Pyrethrins concern environmentalists and lawmakers who are introducing legislation that explores links between hormone-disrupting chemicals such as pyrethroids and the dramatic increase in autism, hyperactivity, diabetes, obesity, and breast and prostate cancer.

Propoxur, commonly found in ant and roach killers, depresses the central nervous system and respiratory tract, and overexposure can cause muscle weakness, dizziness, headaches and nausea. This noxious chemical also damages DNA and negatively affects fetal growth. The chemical N-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide which is found in ant and roach sprays, household foggers, and flea and tick repellents is an excitotoxin that can depress the central nervous system, causing decreased heart rate, loss of consciousness and possibly death.

Infants and children, whose internal organs and brains are still developing, and who are especially sensitive to the health risks these pesticides pose, require us to be very careful about the ingredients on the labels of the products we use — especially in our gardens and play areas. Researchers have found that exposure to home pesticides and insecticides more than doubles a child’s chances of developing neuroblastoma, a rare type of malignant brain tumor, and increases the risk of leukemia.

An American Cancer Society study suggests children exposed to household insecticides are three to seven times more likely to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This is terrible knowledge to live with, and we would think it enough knowledge to take these products off our store shelves. We can’t depend on every citizen to do the research required to protect themselves and their families and neighbors!

Here are some DIY Non-Toxic Solutions for You, Your Family & Neighbors:

natural pest controlAnts – If they aren’t too bad, I put a spot of honey on the counter and let them sugar-up. It seems to distract them from other foods. Borax mixed with sugar at entry points will help too. Vinegar washes away the scent trail ants leave so other ants can find and follow them. Here’s the recipe:

1⁄4 cup vinegar
2 cups water
10 to 15 drops of peppermint, clove, eucalyptus or tea tree essential oil.

Keep ants out of your cupboards too: Sprinkle powdered cinnamon, paprika or cayenne pepper across their trails.

Fleas, Silverfish & Mites Hate Diatomaceous Earth!

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (cheap at feed stores) is fabulous, I hear lots of great things about this product that is new to me. Here’s how to use it:

Fleas: Bathe your dog or cat in natural flea shampoo containing cedar or other essential oils
Rub Diatomaceous Earth on your dog or cat
Sprinkle it in your carpets and vacuum dead fleas after 4 days
Repeat frequently to kill newly hatching fleas

Also, a little vinegar in the water bowls will help keep fleas off animals, and add a little Hymalayian salt for the minerals they need.

Mites: Mix Diatomaceous Earth with dry cactus soil to make a dust bath for chickens and birds to kill mites.

Silverfish: Vacuum the area to remove food particles and insect eggs
Dust with either diatomaceous earth or boric acid (do not use boric acid if you have pets)
Trap silverfish in a small glass jar by wrapping the outside with tape so they can climb up and fall in
The silverfish will be trapped inside because they can’t climb smooth surfaces

Moths & Weevils in Your Grains, Flours and Pasta?

Put a cinnamon stick or bay leaf in the containers to repel the insects without affecting the food’s taste or smell.

House Flies hate Mint, Bay Leaf, Clove and Eucalyptus! Make your own DIY flypaper:

Mix 1⁄4 cup corn syrup
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon brown sugar in a small bowl

Cut strips of brown kraft paper and soak it in the sweetr mixture
Let dry overnight
Hang by making a hole in the top of each paper strip and hang with string.

When transitioning from lawns to sustainable landscaping, the last thing we want to create is a “Cancer Cluster” in our neighborhoods, cities and towns.

The international scientific community announced two very loud wake-up calls in March 2016.

In addition to these findings, there’s a growing body of evidence of health impacts associated with exposure to RoundUp such as endocrine disruption, organ damage and birth defects. The facts are established: Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide is harmful to humans and animals.

Most of the cotton production in the U.S. is genetically modified cotton that is resistant to RoundUp. The cotton is sprayed with RoundUp when the bud is open and the RoundUp/glyphosate is condensed and goes straight into the product.

RoundUp is the most popular weed killer in the U.S. and Roundup Ready cotton, soy and corn crops have been genetically modified to withstand applications of the RoundUp – but we cannot withstand this toxin without experiencing health effects! The U.S. Geological Survey has detected Roundup in 75% of our rain and air samples.

We are trying to save water with our new more sustainable landscapes and conservation efforts — not destroy it, along with our health! To make matters worse, weeds are becoming increasingly resistant to RoundUp, prompting a new stronger product that’s a mix of glyphosate and the herbicide 2,4-D.

Do we want to contribute to this resistance? Let us heed Rachel Carson’s 1962 warning! Today’s experts are saying RoundUp is worse than DDT.

The U.S. and Canada are conducting formal reviews of RoundUp’s safety, lawsuits are pending, and some groups are calling for a global ban.

The European Union Parliament voted to ban RoundUp for most uses in April 2016; 30,000 of Argentina’s doctors have demanded Roundup be banned because it is associated with spontaneous abortions, birth defects, skin disease, neurological disease and respiratory illness.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the France-based cancer research arm of the World Health Organization, said RoundUp has been found in the blood and urine of agricultural workers, showing the chemical has been absorbed by the body. A summary of this study was published in The Lancet Oncology.

I do think landscape companies are unethical that offer RoundUp as a viable solution for our transition to drought tolerant landscaping. Why endanger the ground water when we are trying to save ground water???

Please consider the health of humans, pets, wildlife, bees and other pollinating insects – not to mention property values if cancer rates skyrocket in your community creating a “Cancer Cluster.” There are safe and sustainable options to RoundUp.

RoundUp has killed off most of the Milkweed plant across our nation, and it’s the only plant Monarch caterpillars eat while fattening up to become butterflies. I plant Milkweed in my yard to give the Monarchs food and a place to lay their eggs.

Let’s give Monarchs and our Self a helping hand by demanding our local stores stop selling RoundUp. Boycotts are a good call in this situation. Let your local store owners know that you will be back when they discontinue these products.

I called my local Ace Hardware that I rely on often, spoke to the manager, and let her know that local health and our water supply trumps corporate policy. I will not shop there as long as RoundUp is on their shelves.

Bee Health ImprovingBee health is improving with the removal of Neonicotinoids from agriculture in the U.S. and worldwide. Neonicotinoids are based on nicotine, a natural insecticide produced by the tobacco plant. In addition to being a highly addictive neurostimulant in humans, nicotine is toxic to insects and pollinators like bees. Another reason to Stop Smoking!

Neonicotinoids are systemic insecticides that are devastating bee populations and threatening our nation’s food supply. Neonicotinoids act as an insect nerve agent. They are mostly used as a seed treatment, meaning the chemical pervades the plant, including the nectar and pollen on which bees feed. Neonicotinoids have been in use for more than a decade and are thought to be harmless to humans and other mammals.

Neonicotinoids were banned in the European Union two years ago. Fast-declining-populations of pollinators, including bees, have been identified as a serious risk to global food production. 90% of pollination is performed by wild bees, moths, hoverflies and other insects. Neonicotinoids have only ever been tested by regulators on honeybees, and these tests were only conducted for a few days to check for immediate lethal effects. The sub-lethal effects that could, for example, weaken bees’ defences against disease were never tested. Cocktails of pesticides used by farmers are not tested either. The ban on Neonicotinoids in France is not a total ban. Only three neonicotinoids will be suspended and only from flowering crops, on which bees feed. Neonicotinoids will still be used on winter crops, when bees are dormant, and in greenhouses.

– Popcorn Lovers Beware!
There are roughly 40 insecticides currently registered for use as an active chemical on popcorn, including 3 bee-toxic neonicotinoid chemicals: clothianidin, thiamethoxam, and imidacloprid. Between 79 and 100 percent of corn seed in the U.S. is coated with neonicotinoids, and popcorn is no exception. In October 2015, one week after The Center for Food Safety (CFS) launched their campaign, the popcorn giant, Pop Weaver — the second largest popcorn supplier in the U.S. — made a precedent setting commitment to phase out bee-toxic popcorn seed coatings. This is the first U.S. food company to commit to phasing out uses of neonicotinoid seed coatings. CFS’s campaign also targeted Pop Secret, which sources much of its popcorn from Pop Weaver, and is working to secure a similar commitment from the company.

“We are pleased to see a leader in the popcorn industry make this commitment to protecting bees and the environment. With a large share of the market, Pop Weaver has the ability to not only become leaders in pollinator protection but to also influence their competitors in the popcorn seed market to do the same. This is a very important market shift. We have offered to work with Pop Weaver and other popcorn companies to effectively reach these benchmarks and ultimately phase out the use of bee-toxic seed coatings all together.” Larissa Walker, Pollinator Program Director at Center for Food Safety.

Bee health improvingSeed coatings are a common but relatively new method of applying pesticides to crops. The seed is covered with the pesticide or pesticide mixture (fungicide, herbicide, and insecticide combinations are common), allowing the chemicals to be taken up into the plant as it grows – ultimately rendering the whole plant toxic. Yet only 5% of the active chemical pesticide on the seed coating enters the plant, leaving the remaining 95% to enter the environment through seed dust or soil contamination and water runoff.

bee health improvingThe widespread use of neonicotinoid seed coatings on popcorn is particularly alarming because of their documented harm to pollinator species, like bees, that are vital to our food supply and environment. To date, more than 4 million Americans have called on the government to take stronger actions to protect bees from toxic pesticides like neonicotinoids.

Pop Weaver is not alone in taking action to protect bees from neonicotinoids: In 2014, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that their agency is banning neonicotinoid insecticides from being used on all wildlife refuges nationwide by January 2016. The European Union has a moratorium on the most toxic uses of neonicotinoids. The Province of Ontario, Canada plans to reduce the number of acres planted with neonicotinoid-coated corn and soybean seeds by 80 percent by 2017.

Bee Health Improving4 Million Signatures to Ban Neonicotinoid Pesticides were presented to the White House by conservationists, beekeepers, farmers, and ordinary citizens demanding a ban on pesticides implicated in the die-off of pollinators.

A coalition of 125 groups including eleven of the nation’s top environmental organizations gathered these 4 million signatures in an effort to keep pressure on the Obama Administration to take action, urging the President to take meaningful action on neonicotinoids.

Lowe’s & Home Depot are phasing out Bee-Killing Pesticidesbee health improving – I stopped shopping at Lowes as part of the “Bee Boycott.” After nearly two years of pressure from the public, in April 2015, Lowe’s Home Improvement announced it will begin taking steps to protect bees and similarly affected pollinators from neonicotinoids.

Lowe’s is committed to regularly reviewing the products and information we offer customers and we’re taking the following actions to support pollinator health:

  • Including greater organic and non-neonic product selections
  • Phasing out the sale of products that contain neonic pesticides within 48 months as suitable alternatives become commercially available (Alternatives can be worse, so the public needs to keep an eye on this one)
  • Working with growers to eliminate the use of neonic pesticides on bee-attractive plants we sell
  • Encouraging growers to use biological control programs
  • Educating employees and customers through in-store resources such as brochures, fact sheets and product labels

In December 2015, Home Depot announced it would stop pretreating plants with neonicotinoid pesticides by 2018. They have already stopped treating 80 percent of plants with the harmful chemicals. Last summer, Home Depot announced it would start labeling neonicotinoid-treated plants after a Friends of the Earth study found that more than 50 percent of plants sold in Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Walmart were treated with bee-killing pesticides. Hurray for public pressure! We can vote and make big changes with our consumer $$!

White House Introduces Plans to Improve Bee Healthbee health improving – In May 2015, the Presidential Task Force released its strategy on reducing honey bee population declines and how to improve Bee health and habitat. The USDA and Department of Interior also introduced a set of guidelines for land planners and overseers outlining how to maintain pollinator-friendly properties.

 

Bee Health ImprovingFederal Court Rules in Favor of BeesBees Win!  In September 2015, a federal appeals court overturned the EPA’s approval of Sulfoxaflor, another pesticide that is known to be highly toxic to bees. When sprayed on crops, this pesticide kills insects instantaneously and absorbs into the plant itself. Bugs that eat the plant die as well. Judge Mary M. Schroeder wrote that the EPA “unconditionally registered” Sulfoxaflor without sufficient research into the toxicity of the chemical compound. Judge Schroeder ordered that Sulfoxaflor be pulled from stores by Oct. 18, 2015. In response, the EPA issued a cancellation order on Sulfoxaflor products, prohibiting the distribution and sale of these bee-killing pesticide-laden items.

Chemical companies warn of a return to older pesticides that are even more harmful to bees. But, there is little evidence for this and recent farming trends are towards using natural predators and crop rotation to control any pests. That’s the good news.

U.S. Considers Listing the Rusty Patched Bumblebee as EndangeredBee health improving – There are no bees or bumblebees listed under the Endangered Species Act. This move comes amid growing concern about the decline of honeybees which pollinate a third of the world’s food supply. Once common to the Eastern Seaboard and the Midwest, the rusty-patched bumblebee has disappeared from 87 percent of its historic habitat. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in January 2013 petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the rusty-patched bumblebee as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. After no action was taken, the group followed up with a lawsuit in 2014. Last week the FWS finally responded and agreed that the species may merit protection. The agency will conduct a 12-month review to determine if an Endangered Species Act listing is warranted.

“This is a pretty big deal, even though this is just the first step in the listing process. Listing the species could not only help preserve it, but also help the many plants that it has historically pollinated, including wildflowers and commercial crops such as blueberries, cranberries, apples, and alfalfa.” Sarina Jepsen, Endangered Species Program Director for the Xerces Society. She cowrote the initial petition.

So, it seems, the tobacco industry has found another market for its toxic nicotine. But like all issues at this time, consumers and activist organizations are fighting this greed too. Remember to use organic farming and gardening methods, and to add flowering plants to your home gardens to help grow our bee colonies — and to save the bees, ourselves, and our planet. Bee well!

Rachel Carson’s concerns were that toxins “break the connections of life.” Her 1962 book, Silent Spring, began the Environmental Movement in the U.S. Rachel Carson’s warnings were about Chlorinated Hydrocarbons such as DDT, the most dangerous chemical of her time. Today, those same dangerous chlorinated hydrocarbons appear in industrial solvents, pesticides, and our nonstick pans and cookware, patented as Teflon, but now manufactured by many brands.

Chlorine is used to bleach the paper and the waste is dumped into our lakes and rivers. The chlorine, then bonds to organic matters and creates Organchlorines such as Dioxin.

Today’s #1 toxic chemicals — besides nuclear — are Organochlorides called Dioxins. They are mutagenic, carcinogenic, and have deleterious effects on the environment, and on human reproductive, immune, and nervous systems. Dioxins are the DDT of today!

Dioxins are the by-products of a wide range of manufacturing processes that include smelting, chlorine bleaching of paper pulp, and the manufacturing of some herbicides, germicides and pesticides.

Dioxins are some of the most toxic chemicals known on earth. They commonly appear in our lakes and rivers, in breastmilk, and in our tampons, facial and toilet paper, disposable diapers, and paper towels. Once dioxins enter the body, they last a long time because of their chemical stability and their ability to be absorbed by fat tissue, where they are then stored in the body. More than 90% of human exposure is through food, mainly meat and dairy products, fish and shellfish. Contaminated animal feed is often the root-cause of food contamination. Babies can be exposed through breast milk.

Dioxins are highly toxic and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones and also cause cancer. The complications that these products cause may not become evident for years or decades.

“In the early 1990’s, the Endometriosis Association found that 79% of a group of monkeys developed endometriosis after exposure to dioxin in their food during a research study over ten years earlier. The severity of endometriosis found in the monkeys was directly related to the amount of T.C.D.D. (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin — the most toxic dioxin) to which they had been exposed. Monkeys that were fed dioxin in amounts as small as five parts per trillion developed endometriosis. In addition, the dioxin-exposed monkeys showed immune abnormalities similar to those observed in women with endometriosis.” The Endometriosis Association

Due to the omnipresence of dioxins, all people have background exposure and a certain level of dioxins in their body. Due to the high toxic potential of this class of compounds, the World Health Organization (WHO) says that efforts need to be undertaken to reduce current background exposure.
