Preventing Cancer with Audra Conklin

Preventing Cancer with Audra Conklin - Control What You Can: Your HomePreventing Cancer with Audra Conklin, “Control What You Can: Your Home”

In our Telesummit Series, “Preventing Cancer: Exposing the Environmental Causes” we explored toxins, radiation, hormone disruptors, cell phones, sunscreens, fluoride, fracking, GMOs, flame retardants and BPA — and Steps You Can Take To Prevent Cancer and its Recurrence.

Audra Conklin is the former owner of Modern Mermaids Eco-Products. She built her business with kitchen chemistry and Essential Oils, sleepless nights and a lot of humor. She manufactured and sold non-toxic cleaning products in a very competitive market. Audra grew up “green” so she has walked the walk her entire life. She educates the public and businesses on switching out your toxic products for non-toxic ones. You can listen free to Audra Conklin’s interview here!

In our interview, Audra taught us about the connections between Allergens, Asthma, Scented Candles, Plug-Ins, and Air Fresheners — and how eliminating the very small daily doses of these toxins can help prevent chronic health problems, cancer, and it’s recurrence.

She had some good advice for us to get started:

  • Switch out a product or a room at a time with safer healthier products.
  • “Fragrance” means synthetic, made in a lab with petrochemicals.Fragrances can cause health problems, neurotoxicity, headaches and breathing problems. Synthetic Fragrances are irritants, allergens, and can cause Asthma. The good news is most Asthma is preventable.
  • Safely wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.Triclosan in Anti-Bacterial Soaps, Toothpastes, and Fabrics may be associated with endocrine and hormonal toxicity, allergenic effects, organ toxicity, eye and skin irritation, and is suspected of being a carcinogen and environmental toxin.

Live an AntiCancer Lifestyle

I am convinced that in this day and age with chemicals in everything we eat, breathe and wear, that in order to prevent cancer, we want to Live an AntiCancer Lifestyle.

It is possible, and a lot of us are already doing it. Take the fear out of the word “Cancer” by ridding your life of carcinogens and strengthening your immune system. By eating well, exercising and consuming consciously, we can cure the disease if it does occur, or prevent it entirely. With the fear of cancer gone, we won’t be forced into surgery, chemotherapy and radiation before we have a chance to investigate the alternatives. We can research natural remedies that are specific to different cancers, or are overall cancer cures. We can witness the stories of people around the world who have used these cures and be profoundly strengthened through our own process by knowing we are not alone in this journey.

Here are some tips for Living an AntiCancer Lifestyle:

  • living an anticancer lifestyleEat the Rainbow – the colors in foods fight and prevent cancer. It’s true that the colors in our fruits and vegetables are indeed cancer curing, cancer fighting, and add to our longevity and overall health. This time of the year, many colorful fruits and vegetables come available that weren’t there in the Spring and Summer. Enjoy learning new recipes for winter squash and add many new spices and herbes to soups and salads. Tumeric, green tea, and Resveratrol fight cancer at it’s stemcell root so it doesn’t metastasize. Eating the Rainbow adds a whole new palate to our meals every season!
  • Eat locally grown organic foods in season. Of course, organic foods are preferred, and some foods are especially important to buy organic, like apples, strawberries and potatoes. (See the whole “Dirty Dozen” list here.) Buying organics in bulk help us to get the price down, and growing as much of our food ourselves that is absolutely possible adds to the quality of our life and our connection to Mother Nature.
  • look for non-gmo certification to live an anticancer lifestyleEat GMO-Free foods – look for certification. GMO foods are created by adding carcinogenicchemicals and organisms of other plants and animals. Our own DNA can be altered by these genetically modified frankenfoods. They are also designed to blow open the bellies of the insects that might eat the plants. The result is that today we have a much higher rates of gluten sensitivity and leaky gut syndrome in humans and livestock than ever before.
  • Sugar feeds cancer cells – eat as little of it as possible – and NO artificial sweeteners. Cancer cannot live without sugar, and each of us consumes large amounts of sugars unless we mindfully decide to limit our consumption. For me, this is my most difficult journey. Eating gluten free also adds a lot of useless sugars to our diet if we are not careful. And please research artificial sweeteners if you are not already aware of their serious health effects, including obesity.
  • Good fats are a better form of energy than sweets. Good fats like coconut oil give us a much better afternoon energy spurt than any candy, ice cream, or pastry ever will.  If it’s energy you are looking for, go for the good fats.
  • exercise regularly for an anticancer lifestyleOxygen kills cancer cells so exercise regularly. Cancer cells cannot live in oxygen nor an alkaline environment. Many of our foods are acidic, so it’s very important to balance our Ph through our diet. Exercising is a great way to oxygenate every cell in our body, as well as drinking filtered and even alkaline water.
  • Cook with stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic – NOT non-stick or aluminium cookware. The manufacture of non-stick cookware even destroys our ozone, so you know it can’t be good to cook in. We only have to look at how our grandmothers cooked using cast iron skillets and ceramic bakeware to see how they lived to  be old and wise! Add these wonderful olde cooking tools to your kitchen, along with stainless steel — and toss out the aluminium and non-stick cookware — and you will be serving up delicious and healthy meals.
  • reusable produce bags for an anticancer lifestylereusable bags for an anticancer lifestyleNever let your food touch plastic! For me, this is the most important take-away from our Lean Into Green Telesummit. Wax paper is available again in healthy food markets, and with the help of saved rubber bands, it is possible to keep leftovers fresh in the fridge. Wax paper or cloth food bags also work for lunches and food storage. This isn’t as difficult as it may seem, and it adds to the mindfulness of our eating and food prep activities.
  • Be really particular what you put on your face and body, it’s all absorbed into your liver and other organs. This includes hair products and nail polishes. There’s a lot of carcinogens in these products. Shop carefully and read labels. Check out our natural beauty products here.
  • Since we are talking about cancer, protect your kidneys and all your vital organs from carcinogenic materials by drinking and cooking with Multipure Drinking Water Systems. These systems are tested and certified to reduce the widest range of contaminants than any other filter in the industry.Genny, hope this helps women connect the dots a bit more to protect from breast cancer and other cancers.

100% Natural Sun Protection

100% Natural Paleo Sun Protection by Primal Life OrganicsIf you are like me, you’re hearing a lot of new information about Sunscreens causing more harm than good. While daily exposure to the sun is essential to your overall health, 100% Natural Sun Protection is difficult to find.

We’re excited to share one woman entrepreneur’s recipe for Paleo 100% natural sun protection. SunUp Before Sun Protector by Primal Life Organics is Organic, Paleo, Gluten Free, Vegan and Handcrafted. It’s truly Cavegirl Skincare that works for Caveboys too!

– 100% natural ingredients
– Full strength (NO Water)
– Sun-Up Balms are designed to stay on the skin and repel water while protecting your skin and your internal body
– Sun-Up has been tested and has remained on the skin for hours after application and water activity
– A VERY little bit goes a VERY long way
– Broad-spectrum protection from damaging UV-A and UV-B rays.

sunup before sun protection by primal life organics starts with raspberry seed oilIt all starts with Red Raspberry Oil which has an SPF of 25-50 and contains vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that protect you against free radical damage. Free radicals in the body can cause health issues such as cancer, immune suppression and signs of aging. Commercial sunscreens contains chemicals that promote free radical damage, and when you add that to sun exposure, the sun becomes your foe – not your friend!

SunUp Ulta Balm and Roll-On Stick contain Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, a non-toxic, and typically non-irritating, effective broad-spectrum sunblock. “Non-Nano” means that the zinc particles are too large to be absorbed through the skin. The zinc particles sit on the outermost layer of your skin, scattering and absorbing UVA and UVB rays, protecting the skin below.

The Ingredient List is all things familiar! Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Pure Filtered Beeswax*, Avocado Oil*, Extra Virgin Olive Oil*, Virgin Coconut Oil*, Vitamin E Oil*, and Essential Oils of Carrot Seed*, Lavender*, Myrrh*, and Sandalwood*.

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor spaces. Here are some tips to improve indoor air quality in your home and office:

– Open your windows daily.

As soon as the weather warms up, open your windows and let in that fresh air. When the weather is still cool, open them up during the warmest part of the day for a fresh invigorating breath of fresh air. When the days are going to be hot, open your windows early in the morning, and then close them up to keep the house cool. Nature’s air conditioning is the safest and most refreshing.

African Violets to help clean your indoor air quality– Bring plants indoors, they actually create clean air.

There are any number of flowering and non-flowering plants that do well indoors and are not toxic to cats and dogs. My favorite at the moment are African Violets which I am actually getting to rebloom with a product named VF11 that can be used indoors and out to increase flowering. The secret with orchids and African violets is not to overwater. Once a week is enough, and test the soil to make sure it is dry before watering. These plants are natural to rainforest where the ground is sheltered from direct hot sun, so mimic that environment for your plants if they are not friends with hot sunny windows.

grow herbs in your window sills to clean your indoor air quality– Grow herbs in your window sills to save money and improve indoor air.

Many herbs are antiviral and antibacterial, such as thyme, basil, dill, oregano, garden sage, and others. And if they are right in front of you when you are in the kitchen, you are more likely to include them in your salads, sandwiches, and main dishes. People around the world use their food as medicine, and we can too!

Use natural non-toxic body products that don't off gas toxins– Use skin products that are safe for all family members.

“The average woman uses 9 personal care products a day, containing over 100 unique ingredients, some of which are linked to cancer and reproductive harm. Start giving your personal care products a safety makeover.” Women’s Voices for the Earth. We know that what you put on your skin is in your your blood and filtered through your liver. Make sure it is nourishing!

– Don’t use candles and air fresheners with the word “fragrance” on the label.

Fragrances are especially toxic and contain any number of carcinogens and neurotoxins. Manufacturers are protected from telling us what ingredients make up their proprietary fragrance recipes, so beware. Buy and use products that use natural ingredients for scent. Essential Oils of familiar plants like lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass and others are scents you can trust. Essential Oils come in small 1/4 to 1 oz. bottles and can be found at all your healthy food stores.

The Joy of Green Cleaning by Leslie Reichert– Use vinegar and baking soda to clean with.

There are many new products on the market that are safe with ingredient lists you can understand. You can make your own cleaning supplies by adding water to the last couple ounces of table vinegar and putting a spray top on the bottle. We use this for cleaning counter tops, breadboards, tables, stove tops, floor spots, and more. Easy and affordable.

– IMPORTANT: Don’t use dryer sheets or laundry detergents with fragrance.

Synthetic fragrances that last many hours or days are particularly hazardous to your health and your indoor air quality. Bed sheets and clothes that off gas fragrance neurotoxins are particularly hazardous. Many detergents now come Fragrance Free!. These are your safest choices. Add a little lavender or peppermint Essential Oil to your laundry if you want a real clean fresh smell. And dry clothes outside whenever possible to save on gas and electricity. Solar is still available for free:)

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – From Awareness to Prevention

Breast Cancer Awareness Month : From Awareness to Prevention

October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”
This October, we are changing the discussion from Awareness to Prevention

New scientific evidence is emerging daily, making it clear that the chemicals in our environment play a role in altering our biological processes. It’s clear that our exposures to toxic chemicals and radiation are connected to our cancer risk.  But we rarely hear about this new scientific evidence.

It is difficult to examine and address the effects of individual chemicals and their risks for a disease as complex as cancer. The time between exposures and development of the disease may be decades. We may not know which chemicals we’ve been exposed to, and we are not exposed to chemicals in isolation.

Sign Up for our Preventing Cancer Telesummit: Exposing the Environmental Causes. In this Telesummit and Podcast Series, we will bring this new evidence to your attention. We will examine Hormones and Hormone Disruptors, EMF Cell Phone and Computer Radiation, Fluoride in our water and Fracking in our communities, GMOs and Toxins in Cosmetics and Personal Care Products, Flame Retardants in our furniture and bedrooms, BPA and it’s more toxic replacements, and causes of the 90% unexplained sporadic non-hereditary breast cancers.

As informed consumers, you can begin to control your exposure to chemicals and radiation through personal and political action. Get to know the chemicals that have been linked to cancer and take action to reduce your risk.

During this Telesummit, you will receive one interview emailed to you each Tuesday and Thursday. You will hear from Scientists, Political Activists, Nutritionists, and Women Survivors of Cancer who have made lifestyle changes that combat disease. If you miss any Podcasts, you will have a chance at the end to catch up.

Please share this Blog with your family and friends,
you never know whom you may be helping.

Menopause, Clean Cosmetics and Aromatherapy Products

by Guest Blogger, Genny LaMorgan of Aroma For Health

Clean Cosmetics are a specialty at Green Woman Store. We are passionate about simple and sustainable lifestyles.Natural skin care is part of a green lifestyle. Connecting conscious consumers with women owned businesses that deliver healthy, reliable and sustainable goods is our commitment. Our guest blogger today is Genny LaMorgan who makes some of our Natural Aromatherapy Products.

The “Art of Aromatherapy” is blending Essential Oils to reduce, treat and prevent stress, illness and symptoms. Essential Oils are the very concentrated natural compounds distilled from plants. Enhancing your well-being is sometimes the goal, but oftentimes, it is the very beneficial “side effect” of Aromatherapy products.

Aromatherapy Massage Oils blended with therapeutic Essential Oils allow these antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal concentrated compounds to be absorbed through your skn and into your bloodstream in 3 to 30 minutes. During the time you are using the Massage Oils, you are absorbing the healing vapors through your nose and your olfactory system which covers the entire top of your brain! Aromatherapy changes how we think.

Menopause requires mood enhancement as much as symptom relief. Aromatherapy products such as Sprays, Creams and Massage Oils introduce probiotic (Essential Oils do not destroy the good bacteria in your system) medicinals that treat our Menopause symptoms without the side effects of carcinogenic ingredients, toxic chemicals, and artificial hormones.

Vitex herbe, sometimes called Chaste Berry, is a hormone balancer that can be  taken as teas or capsules, and can also be absorbed through your skin when used in body care compounds. Aromatherapy’s Vitex Essential Oil cream is useful for strengthening vaginal tissue and reducing dryness which is so common as we women age. Vitex cream has also been found to help lighten the dark spots that come with hormone imbalance.

Aroma For Health Estrogenic Face CreamWhen a hot flash hits, what is the best immediate relief? A soothing Aromatherapy Face and Body Spray! Keeping it in the refrigerator can increase the cooling effect. There are a few natural sources of Estrogen used in Aromatherapy. My favorites are Clary Sage and Fennel. These two Essential Oils add a wonderful aroma to our “over 40” Estrogenic Face Cream. Mixed with Rose Geranium to help with water retention, and lavender to calm and balance, this is an aromatic recipe for relief.

Do you take your own Massage Oil when you go to have a massage? Well, it’s always a good idea. Oftentimes massage therapists are not aware of the therapeutic benefits of Aromatherapy, and they may be missing this opportunity for optimum health. Aromatherapy Essential Oils are absorbed through your skin wthin 30 minutes directly into your bloodstream. Menopause Massage Oils introduce natural hormone balancing therapy at a safe and effective dose. When menopausal symptoms are at their worst, or when they are just beginning, having a 30-minute Aromatherapy Menopause Massage twice a week for four weeks has proven in studies to give effective relief.

A daily dose of Menopausal Creams, Sprays and Body Oils is something you can do for yourself to help bring symptom relief, and to add a great floral scent to your graceful aging process. It is always nice to smell the roses, and in this case the roses are right at your fingertips.

I am currently formulating a new Trio: Menopausal Face Spray, Vitex Cream, and Menopause Massage, Bath and Body Oil. I look forward to introducing our new Menopause Aromatherapy Products in the Fall.
